Google Chrome might be the fastest web browser available to us at the moment, but it has its share of disadvantages too. Even Google fanboys at some point get frustrated by the memory leaking problem with chrome that causes it to hog down on a computer’s memory, eventually leading to slowing down the PC.
Microsoft’s Edge is out now and according to the initial customer response, it seems that Chrome has finally got a contender. But as far as features and functionality are concerned, Chrome is going to be the undisputed winner of the Arena for the time being.
Coming to the point of this article, everyone one of us who prefers to use chrome cant simply let go of it because all the features and conveniences that it provides to us. To sum it up its a all in one web browser that let us enjoy faster browsing and at the same time it’s extremely huge extensions database make its much more than a web browser.
Chrome users have thousands of extensions to choose and install from in order to extend the functionality of the browser, but what not many are aware of is, theextensions are one of the two culprits behind chrome high CPU and memory usage. The second culprit is undeniable the flash player plugin that has become an omnipresent entity on the majority of the websites on the internet. Without flash, the internet wont be as interactive as you see it today.
I have already written a guide on fixing chrome’s high memory usage problem which was mainly written for Desktop Computers. However after using a laptop for some time, I faced another problem with Google Chrome that primarily affects laptops. Unfortunately Chrome consumes a lot of power on Laptops and the problem is highly evident on Macbooks as the Mac OS lets you view the most battery consuming apps straight from the Menu bar.
Fortunately, Google has been constantly looking into the customers feedback and making changes to Chrome accordingly. In the latest changes made to Chrome, you can now let chrome automatically detect and run the important plugins only. The new feature will intelligently stop running plugins that are not necessarily required in order to view a webpage and thus it should reduce Chrome’s memory hogging problem and eventually decrease the power consumption on your laptop. The new feature works alike on all operating systems including Windows, Mac and Linux.

Note: Plugins and extensions on Chrome are two separate entities here. Extensionscan be downloaded from Chrome’s web store. Whereas Plugins are necessary elements that are required to properly display a web page i.e elements such as flash and javascript.

Here’s how you can reduce battery drain on your laptops while using Google Chrome.
- Head over to Google Chrome’s Settings.
- Click on Show Advanced Settings to view the Advanced Settings.
- Click on Content Setting.
- Select Detect and run important plugin content under the Plugin settings. Click on Done to save the changes.
That’s it, now Google Chrome will intelligently stop running plugins that are not necessarily required in order to view a webpage.
